Spinner Zentangle Pattern

Spinner Zentangle

(by Jo Flaherty)

Spinner is a Jo Flaherty original tangle. Join her facebook page called "Zia tips, tricks and techniques" for all of your tangly-goodness needs!

I've posted a few of my pieces below, featuring the Spinner tangle, followed by a video showing my basic rundown of Jo's design. You can have so much fun with this simple tangle, it's not hard to do at all and adding to it is really easy.  Pop onto the facebook page and see what others have done with this pattern, it's truly spectacular!

So here goes

2nd attempt - with a little splash of colour

3rd attempt - went bigger here, and really got into it.

And finally, got a little busy on this one and played with colour a whole lot more.  Sadly, my puppers got a hold of it overnight and gave it a little chew...

2nd Attempt at Hamadox

2nd Attempt at Hamadox

So this is part 2 of my Hamadox adventure.  You can see part 1 here.  This time around I got a little more playful with my Tombows and with the Hamadox pattern.  I remembered to take a few pics this time as I went along. Hope you enjoy!

1st Attempt at Hamadox

1st Attempt at Hamadox

Hamadox (Diana Schreur): what a funky idea! It's a mixture between paradox and hamail.  I didn't like the way it looked when I first tried it out (you can see a bunch of my attempts in the background paper of my lineart picture). So I tried a little something different.  Give me a few days and you'll be able to see the video of how I tweaked it to my liking.

In the meantime, I had fun with this piece.  I used my Towbow marker to give that orange pop of colour and I love it.

That's my puppy's fur in the right corner of the pic - she was hogging the natural light from the window :)

And here is the line art, a few moments after I started shading  - woopsies!

You can see there in the background that I played around with getting the hang of this before I started on the tile.

2nd Attempt at Neuron Zentangle

2nd Attempt at Neuron Zentangle

So I went for the Neuron Zentangle again, but this time I also included Hamail in order to prepare myself for the Diva challenge of Hamadox. It involved using Paradox and Hamail Zentangles.  More on that to come…

I used my trusty copics for the colouring in the Hamail, and then just a basic HB3Staetdler pencil for shading the rest – and as usual, I used my copic microns.  This time, for the background, I used the grey copic markers as well.  (links for these items at the bottom of this post).

The Hamail tangle took me a few tries before I could get it right and even still, I struggled. The original walkthrough can be found here: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/110760472062404322/

1st Attempt at Neuron Zentangle

1st Attempt at Neuron Zentangle

Okay so the title here is a bit of a lie - this is actually my second attempt at the Neuron Zentangle, but the first one was so awful I wound up using the paper as a tester for combination colors.  Yeah, it was that bad.

Seems to be the general consensus that not many are fond of this tangle - yeah, me neither.  I might do a few pieces with it - but really, it's not very fun.  It's kind of like a tangle within a tangle, or more to the point, a string within a string. But - it was a challenge, and I may have a few more of these pieces up my sleeve.

I used copic markers for the colouring in this, hb3 pencil for shading and copic microns. I used a white pencil crayon for the highlights.

Here's the finished piece:

All things Mak-Rah-Mee!

All things Mak-Rah-Mee!

All things Mak-Rah-Mee! Eni Oken put up Mak-Rah-Mee by Michele Beauchamp (aka Shelly Beauch) as last week’s challenge on her Shading Zentangle fb page.  Loving this tangle! There is so much more I can imagine doing with this tangle, but alas, time to more on to the next.

This is my summary post of all of the Mak-Rah-Mee experiences I’ve had over the last week or so.  The Mak-Rah-Mee Zentangle pattern's original tangle step-out can be found here.

A special “Thank you” to Eni Oken who posted this Mak-Rah-Mee challenge on her amazing FB page “Shading Zentangle”.  Be sure to stop by her website and check out her very cool books!

At the bottom of this page you'll find the 3 pieces I've done with Mak-Rah-Mee.  Click on the link associated with any of the photos to see the full posts and line art etc. for each piece.

Last but not least, here is my video of a nice and basic Mak-Rah-Mee Zentangle design.

3rd Mak-Rah-Mee Zentangle with Diva Challenge

3rd Mak-Rah-Mee Zentangle with Diva Challenge

Here’s my 3rd Mah-Rah-Mee zentangle attempt, and I incorporated Diva’s Moebius challenge into the piece.  Or more to the point, I worked the Mak-Rah-Mee into the Moebius challenge.  Either way, the ribbon itself was not an easy task, and I’m not too happy about how it turned out, but at least I gave it a try!

Since my video for Mak-Rah-Mee is ready, I figured I’d add it here too if anyone is interested – it’ll also be included in my “All things Mak-Rah-Mee” post soon to come.

Hands On!

Hands On!

So I'm way late in getting this out there - this was the challenge for ZEN N ZIA's FB page, the Palm Zentangle challenge from January 9th. (See, told you I was way late).

As you can probably see from the pics, this was a large piece and took a very long time to do - but wow, was it ever fun!

I got to play with all sorts of fun toys - here's a brief list of the items I used:

  • distress inks
  • watercolor pencils
  • copic skin color markers
  • copic greys
  • white gelly roll pen
  • Paint brushes, sponges, tinfoil, water bottle caps and lions and tigers and bears oh my!

Bit did I ever get to try out a bunch of new techniques.  If you have any questions about how I did a certain section please feel free to ask, I'm all about sharing :)

And now, on to the pics!

2nd Attempt at the DraWings Zentangle

2nd Attempt at the DraWings Zentangle

Not only is this my 2nd attempt at DraWings, I merged it with the Diva Challenge for Orbs-la-dee. Double the challenge, double the fun!

I started off by using distress inks on the tile – sorry there are no before pics.  I’m realizing that before pictures completely slip my mind when I’m doing the DraWings tangle.

So here’s how it turned out!

4th Attempt at Stella Zentangle

4th Attempt at Stella Zentangle

And I'm back to nautical again! This like an old-fashioned compassy thing going on here.  (By the way, it's not actually a pink background, the color from the laptop surface just kinda made the whole think pinkish).

So there's a bit of a story about this piece.  See I was just about finished the line work when my honey came home - he leaned across my workspace to give me a kiss and knocked over my pop, which fizzed up and exploded over everything, including my 4th stella piece.  So I had to start over.  And I did... but in my impatience and frustration about starting over, I missed weaving two of the points between the ring... C'est la vie, n'est pas?

Anyhow, here is my finished piece:

Looks like I landed back on snowflakes again.  This tangle is really sending me all over the place! Falling from the sky and sailing the seas.

First try at Stella Zentangle

First try at Stella Zentangle

It’s just that time of year I guess. I’m seeing snowflakes snowflakes everywhere!  The Stella tangle was no different.  Right from the very first attempt I saw snowflakes.

So with my first try here, I wanted to play with some new Distress inks that I’d ordered, hence the colourful background. I shaded with my prismacolor pencils and then added some highlights (which aren’t very visible in the picture) with a white gelly roll.

Here’s the final piece:

Sindoo #5

Sindoo #5

I’m gonna have Mambo #5 stuck in my head all night now. Oh woah is me, the things we do for art.  Anyhoo, I’m nearing the end of my Sindoo Zentangle adventure.  It’s been quite a ride.  For an easy tangle it certainly has a lot of versatility to it.

This piece was created with a bit of topsy turviness, black and white. And since winter is heavily upon us in the Great White North, a little starry snowflake type design was added to the middle.

3rd Sindoo #Zentangle tile

3rd Sindoo #Zentangle tile

Third times the charm right? Either that or it was just time to get really crazy! I wanted some free-floating sindoos to play with, so that’s what I did.  I also wanted to really play around with the different ways this tangle can be filled in.  I used a pencil for loose grid lines, scattered here and there throughout the tile, then got my sindoo-on.

A couple of before pics this time…

2nd Attempt at Sindoo Zentangle

2nd Attempt at Sindoo Zentangle

I wanted to spice things up a little with this 2nd Sindoo piece, so I added and extra layer to the “petals” and softened the piece up with some Skye on the sides.  It still didn’t feel “finished” to me, so I added the lines between the “flowers”.  What can I say? I see them as flowers.

Ilana Zentangle

Ilana Zentangle

Again this week the Diva Challenge prompted us to use a grid tangle. This time though, the challenge was to mix it up, to move the pattern around to give it a different effect.

I searched through tangles to find one that would work with this idea, a good part of them simply can’t be switched up as they fit the whole square.  Then I came upon the Ilana tangle and decided to give it a try.  Somehow it wound up looking more like b’dylan gone awry, but I think it works.

Zentangle with Distress Inks

Zentangle with Distress Inks

First Zentangle Tile with Distress Inks
First Zentangle Tile with Distress Inks

This is my first attempt as using distress inks for my background. I love, love, LOVE it! So much fun! I didn’t use the mister-effect because I was anxious to get started on the tangling right away, so I didn’t care to wait for it to dry.  I plan on doing a whole lot more with these distress inks so stay tuned!

For this piece I went with a little Helen Williams style for the tangle, I wanted something that would flow and allow me to shade in different tones.  I used a regular tile, distress inks, micron .1 and .05, a gold prismacolor pencil crayon, a white prismacolor pencil crayon and a white jelly roll.  **Note: White pencil crayon just lightens and blends, does not work as white exactly on top of the distress ink.

No before pics as I got carried away  J

Eaxy Zentangle

Eaxy Zentangle

The Eaxy Zentangle was the Diva’s challenge this week.  It took a little harder to get used to than I expected.  A few tiles were chucked out while I tried to get the hang of this Eaxy.  Also included Eni Oken's Ruutz.

First Attempt at Trelina Zentangle

First Attempt at Trelina Zentangle

I’ve been zentangle-absent for the summer, taking advantage of the nice weather as much as possible before the brutal winter hits my little Canadian town.  I’ve been working sporadically on a larger piece in my downtime which I’m looking forward to share upon its completion.

In the meantime, I’d been admiring the Trelina Zentangle work of other zentanglers on the Shading Zentangle facebook page.  Thank you Eni Oken! Admiring them so much, I just had to give it a try.  Boy oh boy, was it ever a whole lot more difficult than I expected it to be.

I haven’t gotten the hang of yet, not quite.  But below is my first attempt.  I didn’t stop to take a before pic, because I was struggling so much with getting the pattern down.  I’ll be working on getting the hang of this until I do.  I'm predicting plenty more attempt-posts to come!

First Attempt at B’Dylan Zentangle

First Attempt at B’Dylan Zentangle

“The answers m’friend, are blowing in the wind…”

Love, love, LOVE this new tangle pattern!  Easy and fun!  The shading is a little tricky, and I’m not sure if I nailed it, but I’m so very happy with the rest of the shading in this piece.

For the first time, I use a “light source”.  Usually I just shade my zentangles based loosely on the light coming from above.  Keep in mind, drawing in general is not in my nature, or wasn’t for the first 37 years of my life.  Until Zentangle came into my life, I didn’t have an artistic bone in my body.

But here! On this tile! I used the light source coming from the somewhat upper right and I think I may have actual done okay! Yay me!

So here is the before pic, as you can see I started to shade before remembering to take the before pic.
