Bad Attempt at Narwal

Bad attempt at Narwal

For the Shading Zentangle Challenge from Eni Oken I attempt to mix Narwal and Eni’s Tri-roda.  I don’t know if it’s the color that screwed it up or just the fact that it was my first real attempt at Narwal, but I’m not at all happy with the results.

I used Prismacolor pencils, microns and a Staedtler 2B for shading.

Guess I’ll be doing a lot more Narwal Zentangles for a while. I’ve seen some amazing results on the Shading Zentangle fb page.  There are some very talented artists in that group.  Their amazing pieces have shown me different ways of looking at Narwal, breaking it down into sections I didn’t see before. I just haven’t figured it out quite yet, but am hoping for better results in simple black/white shading.

Maryhill… sort of

Maryhill… sort of

I did the Maryhill zentangle (post is here), and loved the contrast in the shading so much that I did this tile to play with the pattern a bit. I used the same concept as the Maryhill but played around with the actual design.  I like the end result, and of course, I completely forgot the before and after pic.

No worries, I took like 5 or 6 pics of the process of my current WIP. Go me!!

Note to self and others: this pattern is a lot easier to follow in the actual Maryhill pattern.  The different angles get confusing.

Trippy Little Zentangle

Trippy Little Zentangle
It’s all in the shading! Of course had I thought of that and taken a before picture I could have actually shown HOW it’s all in the shading. But alas, I didn’t.
I little of the op-art here is lost in the camera image.  In person, this tile looks like it’s spinning if you stare directly at the center or look away.  It’s a fun little tangle to do when you just want to zen out and not think too much.

I can’t remember the name of pattern, sadly, and it so happens to be one of the rare occasions where I didn’t write it on the back of the tile.  I’m full of wins on this one.

(EDIT: A very nice person on the shading zentangle facebook page informed me that this tangle is called Maryhill - Thank you Dawn Collins!)

3rd Tile of Tri-Roda and Bunzo

3rd Tile of Tri-Roda and Bunzo

You’d think I’d be sick of these patterns by now, but still haven’t perfected them, so I’m not quite done yet.  Plus the trippy factor of op-art adds some extra fun into the equation.

Forgot to take a “before shading” pic, (big surprise).  Getting the bunzos to land into the tri-roda’s was a challenge.  As you can probably tell I had to squish them a little on some. All in all the final effect is pleasing to me. *Pats self on back*

Zentangle Butterfly

Zentangle Butterfly

A little bit of fun and whimsy.  I received a pack of prismacolor pencil crayons for Christmas and decided to use them for the first time to play with color-shading this butterfly.  I’m quite pleased with how it turned out.

The best lesson I learned from this piece is to color and shade before you use the microns to do the inner designs. You can see the smudging in the wing flaps where I tried to shade after putting the designs in.

Second Attempt at Both Bunzo and Tri-Roda

Second Attempt at Both Bunzo and Tri-Roda

You can view my first Bunzo attempt here, and my first Tri-Roda attempt here.  This time around I combined the two.  I find anything with the Bunzo tangle turns out pretty trippy.

Looking at it now I realize I probably should have added some shading shadows around the whole thing to give it more depth.

Regardless, I’m going to keep playing with these two designs til I’m finally satisfied with both of them.  I’ve been working on Norwal too, haven’t quite grasped the concept of it quite yet but I’m getting there… I think.

First Attempt at Zentangle Pattern Bunzo

First Attempt at Zentangle Pattern: Bunzo

This pattern is fun, if not a little dizzying.  The pattern tends to spin as you focus on one spot, at least until the shading is done.

I half remembered to take a before pic; had just started the shading when I thought of it.

First pic shows the finished piece, second pic shows a side by side (though badly put together) of the unshaded and shaded contrast.

Zentangle Masked

Zentangle Masked

This was a complex piece to put together.  It took about a week to finish.  The hair was the goal, the funky border and mask were just a bonus.

Tri-Roda Zentangle Tile

Tri-roda Zentangle Tile

I took some time to work out Eni Oken’s Tri-Roda design.  My spidey-sense is tingling, predicting many more patterns tangled out with this fun design. I wish I'd thought to take a "before" shot prior to shading, but alas, this is all I've got; the finished piece.

Tree of Life WIP part 2

Tree of Life WIP part 2

tree of life doodle ZIA zentangle doodleart This is the second phase of the Tree of Life work in progress.  Added color and depth, and working out the wheels.

This piece has been created with nothing but pencil, micron pens and prismacolor pencils.

I'll try to get a better quality picture of the piece in the next stages.

Tree of Life WIP

Tree of Life (WIP)

I thought I would share the stages of the zentangled/doodleart Tree of Life I've been working on.  It's not exactly a step-out so to speak, but the pictures should provide a general idea on how this piece came to be.

Below is the picture of the first stage, no color or finished work here, but I'm loving her just the same.

Stay tuned for more Tree of Life pics as the project progresses.

Second attempt at Verve

I received some tips from the amazing Eni Oken after my first attempt at Verve and shading Verve.  She suggested I go from using a shading pencil to a 2b pencil and here is the results.

After Shading:

Here are the 2 pictures I posted before, my originals on Verve that I used a shading pencil on, then switched to a black pencil crayon because the shading pencil wasn't doing the trick.
