All Things Stella Zentangle

All Things Stella!

This is my summary post of all of the Stella experiences I’ve had over the last week or so.  The Stella Zentangle pattern was created by Jana Pharmer (formerly Rogers) the original tangle walk-through can be found here.

A special “Thank you” to Eni Oken who posted this Stella challenge on her amazing FB page “Shading Zentangle”.  Be sure to stop by her website and check out her very cool books!
At the bottom of this page you'll find the 5 pieces I've done with Stella.  Click on the link beside any of the photos to see the full posts and line art etc. for each piece.

Last but not least, here is my video of a nice and basic Stella Zentangle design.

5th Play With Stella

5th Play With Stella

Thought I'd get my practice on a little more with Stella and my distress inks.  No before pics this time just some playing around. I'm loving the backgrounds with the distress inks, I've got to try to get the water droplet effect going.  Apparently I've been doing it wrong.  Just spritzing the paper doesn't do the trick, which I tried below.  All it did was curl up the paper and make it harder to work with.  Should I have read the instruction booklet first? Yeah probably...

4th Attempt at Stella Zentangle

4th Attempt at Stella Zentangle

And I'm back to nautical again! This like an old-fashioned compassy thing going on here.  (By the way, it's not actually a pink background, the color from the laptop surface just kinda made the whole think pinkish).

So there's a bit of a story about this piece.  See I was just about finished the line work when my honey came home - he leaned across my workspace to give me a kiss and knocked over my pop, which fizzed up and exploded over everything, including my 4th stella piece.  So I had to start over.  And I did... but in my impatience and frustration about starting over, I missed weaving two of the points between the ring... C'est la vie, n'est pas?

Anyhow, here is my finished piece:

3rd Attempt at Stella Zentangle

3rd Attempt at Stella Zentangle

Looks like I landed back on snowflakes again.  This tangle is really sending me all over the place! Falling from the sky and sailing the seas.

2nd Attempt at Stella Zentangle

2nd Attempt at Stella Zentangle

Somehow I went from the Stella Zentangle looking like snowflakes, to it having more of a nautical appearance.  How the heck did that happen? Perception is everything I suppose.  I'm seeing compasses now - go figure.

Here's the final piece:

First try at Stella Zentangle

First try at Stella Zentangle

It’s just that time of year I guess. I’m seeing snowflakes snowflakes everywhere!  The Stella tangle was no different.  Right from the very first attempt I saw snowflakes.

So with my first try here, I wanted to play with some new Distress inks that I’d ordered, hence the colourful background. I shaded with my prismacolor pencils and then added some highlights (which aren’t very visible in the picture) with a white gelly roll.

Here’s the final piece:
